Worship: Living Generously = Living Compassionately

Mark 6:30-44 | Many within the Lutheran church have become familiar with t-shirts from Thrivent bearing the familiar slogan: “Live Generously.” Often, we are encouraged to volunteer our time, give of our resources, and live for the sake of others. But in the midst of already filled calendars and full lives, and when it seems as though it’s challenging to even think about “one more thing,” what does it mean to live generously as a follower of Jesus? As we look to the story of Jesus multiplying the fish and the loaves, join us as we witness the compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ, stirring him to respond in generosity, and leading us to see those around us through the eyes of compassion.

Worship: Gratitude – An Echo of Grace

Luke 17:11-19 | When was the last time you heard, or said, “thank you”? Chances have it that it hasn’t been too long. Societally, we’ve been trained to say “thank you” as a common curtesy. But has this cheapened our response of thanksgiving? Lulling us into a habit of gratitude out of obligation rather than responding authentically? As we consider another act of stewardship – the act of gratitude – join us as we hear the story of a man who, upon receiving God’s grace, returned to Jesus to offer himself in praise and thanksgiving, and join us as we gather around Christ’s table to once again receive God’s life, healing, and forgiveness for ourselves.

Worship: Measuring Faith

Luke 17:5-10 | Ever feel as though you don’t have “enough” to do something? To complete something? To be something? You’re not alone. Even Jesus’ disciples felt ill-equipped to do what Jesus was commanding them. But even when they ask Jesus – Increase our faith! – Jesus assures his disciples, and us, that we do have enough to sustain us and to complete what we’ve been asked to do. So whether you’re feeling as though your faith is in tip-top shape, or is faltering a bit, join us for worship as we practice trusting what God has already implanted within us, and as we went forth to exercise our faith in action.

Worship: Who’s on your doorstep?

Luke 16:19-31 | Wake up in the morning. Start a cup of coffee. Get the kids off to school. Show up for work. Get the job done. Go home to (hopefully) grab some food. Offer your time to community organizations and/or your family in the evening. Go to bed. Repeat. Sound familiar? Perhaps your daily routine is a bit different, depending on your life circumstance. Regardless, after a while, our rhythms may begin to blind us to people around us…sometimes people whom God has placed right at our doorsteps. Whether you feel as though you’re able to see those around you, or have become a bit blind to others, join us for worship as we hear a parable from Jesus – urging us to be attentive to others around us and commissioning us to give generously from what God has first given us.

Worship: Living in the Living Word

Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23; Isaiah 55:10-13 | An average person encounters 20,000 – 30,000 words each day. With so many words floating around us, it’s no wonder that, at times, we don’t fully comprehend some words, nor have the desire to listen to every word! So then, why commit ourselves to engaging with even more words in the Bible? Regardless of your relationship with God’s Word, join us for worship as we hear God’s promise to cast the Word far and wide, and as we commit ourselves to get a little messy as we wrestle with what God’s Word means for us, today.

Worship: Lost and Found

Luke 15:1-10, Psalm 51:1-10 | In the era in which driving with a GPS is the norm, the chance of getting lost is greatly diminished because of a computer system constantly “re-calculating” where you are. But in our lives, we might not always feel as though we have a clear GPS guiding us, and more often than we care to admit, we may feel a bit lost. Whether you feel as though you’re right on track, or have completely lost your way, join us for worship as we hear God’s promise to persistently seek after us and as we are commissioned to dedicate ourselves one to another.

Worship: The Choice of Discipleship

Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Luke 14:25-33 | In the past few years, many have re-evaluated their priorities and how they spend their time. As a result, our commitments have shifted.  So then, what does it mean to be committed to Jesus as a disciple? And what does that ask of us? Join us for worship as we consider the choice of discipleship and are reminded of God’s commitment to us as his children.

Worship: Sabbath Work

Luke 13:10-17 | Often when we consider “keeping the sabbath holy” we might remember the command to refrain from work on the sabbath. However, in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is notorious for healing on the sabbath. In the eyes of leaders of the day, Jesus was disobeying the law. But in Jesus eyes, he was doing exactly what was to be done on the sabbath: offering a new beginning, restoration, and freedom from bondage. Join us for worship as we are freed from that which keeps us bound, and as we are sent forth as laborers in God’s kingdom. Special thanks to Pastor John Meyer for leading worship this weekend!

Worship: All-Consuming Fire

Luke 12:49-56 | Fire, when uncontrolled, can be horribly destructive. At the same time, in a variety of settings, fire may also be used to refine something or bring new life. So then, when we hear this weekend in our Gospel reading that Jesus has come to bring “fire” to the earth, what are we to think? Join us for worship as we consider the nature of fire, and the promise of God’s all-consuming love that desires to fill us and fill our world, refining us to advocate for a reflection of God’s Kingdom in all times and all places.

Worship: The Rich Man and the Great TP Crisis

Luke 12:13-21 | Remember when it was race to get toilet paper or disinfectant wipes from stores at the beginning of the pandemic? Though a memory some of us would rather forget, the urge to “stock up” amidst uncertainty for the sake of ourselves speaks to a parable Jesus tells of a rich man. In keeping his grain for himself, he was able to eat, drink, and be merry, but it was at the expense of his neighbors. Join us for worship as we consider what we are tempted to hang onto for ourselves, and as we are reminded of God’s grace given to us in baptism: freeing us to fully live in relationship with Christ and with our neighbors.
