Companions in Christ Spiritual Formation Groups

Are you looking for a group of people to grow in relationship with one another and with God? Are you looking to engage with Scripture on a regular basis? Are you looking to be transformed and opened to new ways of engaging with your faith?

If so, consider being a part of a spiritual formation group this coming year: Companions in Christ. This series is intended to help small groups open themselves to God’s presence and guidance through both individual and communal practices, exploring themes like Scripture, prayer, discerning God’s will, and the nature of Christian community.

Companions groups are about 6-8 people in size, so we are anticipating forming several groups this year across our ELCA congregations. Meetings are 2 hours in length. Due to timing, those interested in Compaions will determine the best day/time to meet.

The entire sequence is 28 weeks. However, to offer alternatives to those who have seasonal obligations, individuals can complete one part (about 4-5 weeks) and then take a break as needed. Then, when people are ready to jump start again, we’ll reform groups based on interest.

If you’d like to learn more about Companions, we encourage you to talk to anyone who has participated, or is participating, in these groups: Gladys Reif, Marlys Grete, Leslie Eichelberger, Connie Hoekstra, Mackenzie and Nick Gilbert, Andy Christy, Pastor Aleese. Willing to learn more and interested in being a part of a group? Contact Pastor Aleese.  Please indicate your interest in being a part of a group by August 31!

Additional Adult Faith Formation Group Options

In addition to Companions in Christ, we are excited to offer other options. Read below for more information!

Note: those who participated in Re:Storied in 2024-2025 are encouraged to participate in an alternative group as Re:Storied will focus on much of the same material.

For more information and/or to express interest, contact Pastor Aleese or Andy.
To help assess our group size, respond with your interest by August 31.

Christians Underground

Welcome to Maddy Carroll, New Era and Faith Together Muscatine Intern

Sunday, August 24

In just three short weeks, Intern Maddy will be joining us in Muscatine! You can be a part of welcoming her by joining us for worship at New Era on Sunday, August 24. Worship will be at 11:00 am. Stick around afterwards for a potluck meal! Pulled pork and buns will be provided. Read below to get to know a bit about Maddy before she arrives!

Maddy Bio

“I was born and raised in Bettendorf, Iowa. My parents are Jeff and Jamie Carroll and I have an older sister, Bailey, and younger brother, Luke. Family is very important to me. I am very close and spend a lot of time with both my immediate family and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I also have the most adorable nephew, Brady who is 10 months old.

I credit my strong faith and understanding of my call to the women in my family. My Great Grandma, Ann, who I had the privilege of knowing for the first twelve years of my life, raised her children in a Lutheran household, which led my grandma and mother to do the same. I was raised attending St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa where I was very active as a child and youth in the different programming. I found my love of learning about religion here.

I graduated from Bettendorf High School in 2017 and continued my studies at Wartburg College where I majored in Religion and minored in Leadership. I was also very active in the women’s choir and was on the cheerleading team during my time at Wartburg. I graduated with my Bachelors in December of 2020. In the fall of 2021, after a short break from school, I began my time at Wartburg Theological Seminary, where I have been studying to become a Deacon. I have completed my course work and clinical pastoral education and will now be completing my internship alongside all of you.

I am so excited and appreciative of the opportunity to join your congregation and grow in my faith and understanding with you. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you in our time together.”

ELCA Churchwide Assembly Update

Presiding Bishop and Secretary of ELCA Elected

From July 28 – August 2, the ELCA Churchwide Assembly gathered in Phoenix. They addressed many items together, most notably the passage of the Faith and Civic Life statement, the election of the next presiding bishop – Rev. Over the next few weeks, we’ll highlight key happenings from the Assembly. This week, we highlight the election of Presiding Bishop Elect Curry. Curry began as a lay mission developer, and later was ordained a pastor. In 2019, he was elected as bishop of the Metro Chicago Synod. He currently is the chair of the Conference of Bishops.

To learn more about Curry, check out this news release from the ELCA and/or listen to the video compliation below.

Upcoming Companions in Christ Spiritual Formation Groups this fall

This past weekend in worship, we emphasized the importance, and power, of prayer. We pray collectively in worship as a microcosm of the world on behalf of the entire world. And, in our personal prayer, we pray to connect to God as the source of our energy and our life.

If this weekend’s service inspired you to consider your prayer life, we are looking forward to offering a spiritual formation small group this coming school year called Companions in Christ. This series is intended to help small groups open themselves to God’s presence and guidance through both individual and communal practices, exploring themes like Scripture, prayer, discerning God’s will, and the nature of Christian community.

Companions groups are about 6-8 people in size, so we are anticipating forming several groups this year. Meetings are 2 hours in length. Due to timing, those interested in Compaions will determine the best day/time to meet.

Welcome to Maddy Carroll, New Era and Faith Together Muscatine Intern

Sunday, August 24

New Era, along with Faith Together Muscatine, is excited to announce that Maddy Carroll, a student from Wartbury Seminary, has been assigned as a deacon intern to our area! She will officially begin on Tuesday, August 19.

How does this impact us?

  1. As a part of Faith Together Muscatine, we will benefit from Maddy’s leadership among us. She comes with experience in children, youth, and family ministry, and also is interested in non-profits.
  2. Pastor Aleese has been named Maddy’s internship supervisor. This will take some of Pastor Aleese’s time, but it’s highly likely that she – and Shepherd – will also learn and grow from Maddy!

How can we support Maddy?

Join us for a special joint worship and fellowship weekend on Sunday, August 24. Shepherd of the Cross will worship at New Era (11:00 am). Previously we advertised that Voices of Peace, a mission organization, would be leading worship. Because of health complications of those in the band, Voices of Peace will not be joining us. But, Deacon Jodi Schumann from the Southeastern Iowa Synod Office will join us for worship, preach, and officially install Maddy as intern.

After worship, stick around for a joint potluck with all 4 congregations. Bring a dish to pass, catch up with friends from other congregations, and meet Maddy!

ELCA Churchwide Assembly

Currently taking place in Phoenix, Arizona

Hundreds of lay and rostered leaders from the across the ELCA are gathered in Phoenix under the theme “For the Life of the World” from July 28 – August 2.  And, our very own Leslie Eichelberger is taking part as a voting member!

But what is Churchwide Assembly? Similar to Synod Assemblies, the Churchwide Assembly makes decisions about the work of the ELCA, spends time in worship, and engages in opportunities for networking.

This year, two key action items are the election of the ELCA presiding bishop and secretary. Voting members will also consider a proposed social statement on Faith and Civic Life, editorial changes on the social statement addressing Human Sexuality, budget proposals for the upcoming three years, and a report from the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church.

A lot will be happening! To stay in the loop, check out a list of all the things the assembly has before them. Questions? Talk to Pastor Aleese or Leslie Eichelberger when she returns!

Cooling System for Pearl City Outreach

Last week we alerted the congregation to a need that Pearl City Outreach, a haven for many who need immediate assistance in the downtown Muscatine area, needs a new air conditioner. Because of the size of their space, they need a large commercial unit.

Thank you to all those who already contributed this past weekend. Together we offered $1,500.00. If you weren’t able to give, but would like to offer a donation, mail your donations directly to Pearl City Outreach (513 Mulberry Ave Muscatine IA 52761) marked “Air Conditioner.” Thank you for following the love of Jesus by living in community and being merciful to our shared neighbors!

Following in the Love of Jesus Bulletin Board

Summer often sends us in many directions, but that doesn’t mean we need to be disconnected from one another in faith! As you move through the summer, keep an eye out for opportunites to follow in the love of Jesus. Perhaps it’s acts of service; perhaps it’s volunteering for something through SOTC; or perhaps it’s nurturing your relationship the love of Christ within you. Whatever it is, take a picture, and add it to our growing collage of how together we are following the love of Jesus.

Can you help clean up a few things around the church?

We made a good dent in some projects around the church last weekend but we still have two things remaining! If you can help, simply come and do it on your own timetable! Be in touch with Kathy or Pastor Aleese if you’re interested in helping so we know things are covered.

  1. Finish cleaning windows – the inside of the windows need to be cleaned throughout the church except for the main office and Pastor’s office. The outside of the windows needs to be cleaned just in the fellowship area.
  2. Weeding, clean up outside – just as there’s perpetual yard work around our homes, there’s also consistent work to be done around the church building. Feel free to grab a pair of gloves and give a lil’ love to the beds, flowers, and landscaping around the church whenever you had some spare time!
