Matthew 5:1-20 | Ever heard someone say they are “blessed”? We use this phrase often within society, often equating blessing with good fortune. But as Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declares blessing upon people who would not otherwise be deemed “blessed.” Turning the notion of blessing on its head, we find that the people surrounding Jesus are blessed not because of their circumstances but because of what Jesus promises them: the kingdom of heaven. Today, God also looks upon us and declares blessing over us because we too have been ushered into the kingdom of heaven. But what is the kingdom of heaven? And what does it mean to live in the kingdom of heaven? Join us for worship this weekend as we hear God’s blessing upon us, and as we go forth to extend the promise of the kingdom of heaven to all the world.
